VOICE OVER INTERNET (VOIP)

With its rich menu of features, ultra-clear digital sound quality and much lower cost VOIP is the future for voice telephone calls.

Four things are needed to use VOIP telephony:

1. An account with a VOIP service provider
2. A Broadband connection and router
3. A standard or IP telephone or a headset (headphone and michrophone)
4. A computer or Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA)

The choice of equipment and VOIP service provider depends on the quality of service and features required.

Home users often prefer to install free software on their own computer and use a VOIP telephone plugged into a USB port or a low-cost headset and one of the many VOIP providers offering FREE phone call to landlines in the UK and many other countries.

Business users may opt for an IP VOIP telephone that can be plugged directly into a broadband router, avoiding the necessity for a computer. Alternatively a standard telephone, or DECT cordless phone, may be used with a VOIP ATA. 

Commercial VOIP providers offer very low cost phone calls and all the features and services that are associated with traditional PABXs (The box on the office wall) but without the large initial hardware costs.  Additionally all the features and services can be easily configured using any computer on the broadband network to access the virtual switchboard, without having to ask the equipment provider to make the changes - saving time and money.

To hear a demonstration of a business VOIP system try a demonstration system by calling the following test numbers.  Calls to 020 8819 5425 and 020 8819 5426 will be sent to the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system whilst calls to 020 8819 5424 will ring extension 202.
